I cannot recommend this to anyone other than academics who want to feel smugly superior by reading "proper literature"

This is a collection of academic essays about the works of Stephen King. This is a subject that interests me, so I was hoping for more than what I got. The essays were either smugly academic, insufficiently rigorous, or unenlightening. Quite frequently, they were dreadfully dull. Some of the clever and eloquent insults in the Editor's Note and Foreword were the high point of the entire exercise.

The unenlightening were things that I already derived from his work, without the need for additional outside reading. The smugly academic were frequently dismissive and proud of their vocabulary that is useful only in the world of academia. (I have a pretty substantial vocabulary, but often encountered a word that seemed to carry a specific definition in the world of literary critique.)

I had hoped for tougher rigor from this collection of academic essays. The one that really got my dander up, was the Misery essay. This one includes a monstrous logical fallacy that posits that since King has issues with extreme fans (like ones that break into your house) that he hates all his fans. It's clear that the author of the essay holds both King and his readers in disdain, and is only too willing to accept poor logical leaps to write a negative screed.

I cannot recommend this to anyone other than academics who want to feel smugly superior by reading "proper literature" while looking down on popular fiction.

Misunderstanding Critical Analysis

Anyone who knows anything about Bloom and his ongoing war with Stephen King would not be surprised by this book, nor need they be. But the outrage is not needed, nor is it really logical. Bloom has stated previously that he has no particular taste for lack luster literature, and by such i mean King's Prose. The number of novels sold by King mean nothing to Bloom (He also dislikes Poe), Now, King can 'dream everybody's nightmare'(a quote he used for Poe) but his prose, how he conveys the development of his stories, that is the heart of what Bloom rages against. People state that they can't see where his angle is and i find this absurd, it's clear, very clear. The words on the page of a Steven King novel are not up to par with the standards of academia. I read once that society creates the cannon, i disagree, the cannon should create the society. In an age where Shakespeare is dumbed down for the masses (i speak of the irrelevant and insulting prose renditions of Shakespeare, and of Milton for that fact too.) High literature is what Bloom says we should aspire to, and why not? Shakespeare, Milton, Pynchon, Whitman, Keats, Shelley, these artists forced their own reality over ours and in effect recreated our reality in them, why shouldn't modern artists do likewise? Now, here is where i dissent from Bloom. I have read King, and in particular i loved Salem's Lot. Why? I felt King hit a vein deeper than he was ever able to again, and that wain was conveyed through a well developed story. Though once again his prose was poor compared to the likes of Pynchon and Wallace, but i admired the story. I can see the forest for the trees. And about bringing JK Rowling into this, what? Bloom has a documented war with her too, but it is likewise with King, the Prose doesnt meet the aspirations.

Harold Bloom is a Sterling Professor of the Humanities at Yale University and a former Charles Eliot Norton Professor at Harvard. His more than thirty books include The Best Poems of the English Language, The Art of Reading Poetry, and The Book of J. He is a MacArthur Prize Fellow, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the recipient of many awards and honorary degrees, including the Academy s Gold Medal for Belles Lettres and Criticism, the International Prize of Catalonia, and the Alfonso Reyes Prize of Mexico.

"The cognitive condition of someone who understands"

In this "Savvy" guide the author has written a book which will increase the enjoyment, understanding and appreciation of motorcycling for anybody who reads it. She manages to convey her love of the sport and impart a large amount of valuable information using a writing style that is both easy to understand and pleasant to read. As befits a librarian, the book is full of references which will allow those who desire to study a particular subject in depth to do so easily. The book has an extensive bibliography in addition to the many links found within each chapter. This is a great read for not only the new rider, but the returning rider and the experienced rider as well. I highly recommend it.

A lot of good info

As a new rider, attended MSF course and bought my first bike in October 2005 at age 51 I found quite a few of the topics helpful. I have also looked up several of the referenced websites to get further information. I saw the book mentioned on the about.com motorcycle website and requested a copy for Christmas. I would reccomend this book to anyone thinking of starting to ride or who is just starting out.

The nearly blind man was educated at Eton and Oxford and writer of many novels, short stories, essays, drama and verse, but `Brave New World' has proved to be his most lastingly popular work. The title was taken from Shakespeare's `The Tempest', in which Miranda, when seeing the first glimpse of the world outside the island on which she grew up, speaks the words: "O brave new world that has such people in it."
In this novel-of-ideas and dystopia, or in other words, a savage criticism of the scientific future, the motto is Community, Identity and Stability. There is no love, no individualism and people do not have emotions. Everybody belongs to one big group. No one is alone, because everybody is the same. The motto is, off course, an ironic contrast with the battlecry of the French Revolution: Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. It's obvious that Huxley wants to point out the dangerous aspects of the advancement of science. People will abuse the results of investigations, which will make the individual disappear.
The link of the motto with the battlecry of the French Revolution is not the only one. Many of the character's names are composed by use of the names of historical heroes. For example Benito Hoover, is made of Benito Mussolini and Herbert Hoover. This way the writer is parodying all the time.
The story starts at the London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre, where the Director explains some students how humans are being made by the Bokanovski-process. Eggs divide again and again (sometimes even 96 humans are beings hatch from one egg). When the Director asks a student whether he knows what a parent is, he answers: `"Human beings used to be." he hesitated; the blood rushed to his cheeks. "Well, they used to be viviparous."'
Bernard Marx is different from others. Something went wrong when he was in his bottle. He turned out to be, although he is, too small for an Alpha. He doesn't look like and has more emotions than other Alphas, which makes him not belonging to the big group. He and his colleague Lenina, a very pretty girl, who is very popular among the Alphas, go to New Mexico, to the Savages. Here the people haven't been scientifically produced. They meet John and his mother and take them to their world, which John really likes. He would love to see the New World. John hasn't been manipulated, so he's still able to have strong feelings....
A real pessimist can only think of a world like this. Therefore I think it's amazing how Huxley made up this story. It's been a great pleasure reading it, and it makes you start thinking about what the world will be in the future. Next to that, there's another, an educational aspect in the book. People have to be aware of abusers of knowledge. Huxley sure makes clear what he wants to say. It's a perfect novel.

A Shocking Glance At The Future

This was a great book. Huxley's view of a future "Utopian" state is very shocking, and it says a lot about society and technology. It really makes you think, and I like that. It is also very straightforward and it's hard to miss the point Huxley is making. If you like science fiction this book is a must! Definitely worth your time.

Everyone should be required to read Brave New World. Huxley provides great insight into the effects of science dominating the human race. He shows that life in the Utopia is more efficient in many respects, however it lacks the deep human emotions that give meaning to life other than "constant consumption." Although first published in 1932, it is amazingly close to reality of life today. Brave New World's vivid descriptions and lively commentaries will hold your attention throughout the entire book. Once you pick it up, you won't be able to put it down!

Cuando Crees Que Las Metas Son Inalcansables

Cuantas veces te has despertado y pensado que tu vida es lo mismo, que debe haber mas disponible para ti en este mundo. Pues no estas equivocado, todo el mundo en una ocasion o otra va por esta sensacion. Es normal sentir que tienes una capacidad, aptitud para lograr tus sueño.

En este libro el Autor presenta una parabola moralitica sobre un personaje llamado "Ordinario". Vivio toda su vida en lo que se puede llamar pobresa. Con el temor de ser un don nadie para toda su vida, enbarca en la trayectoria hacia el sueño que tiene. El autor divide la historia en dos, la primera parte es la historia de ordinario y su vida en familiar. la segunda parte se concentra exclusivamente en la perspectiva del autor (Wilkinson) y como el se a encontrado con situciones y factores que lo de tuvo a el mismo y a conocidos de ir tras su sueño.

El libro lo recomiendo para aquel que haya perdido fe en Dios y que no tenga motivacion en si mismo. El libro es corto y bastante sencillo, se puede terminar en un dia si quiere. pero recomiendo que tome su tiempo con el para absorber le enseñansa que ofrece. tambien esta disponible en otras ediciones y en otros idiomas. La unica critica que tengo hacia el libro es la repeticion, en ocasiones el autor repite la misma perspectiva tantas veces en distintas formas que uno se pone a pensar " esto me parece haberlo leido" tambien hubiese sido mejor si el autor le deice al los personajes nobres actuales y no el nobre de "ordinario" y "mejor amigo"...en sierta forma la estructura del libro pudo ser distinto...pero no significa que no sea bueno, al contrario, tiene bastante que ofrecer para aquel que quiera lograr su sueño.

My two cents

Much has been said here on the plot and dialog. I'd like to add my opinion about two closely-related scenes: Henry's back and forth, back and forth internal dialog about "what if she dies?" and "she can't die!" is the most powerful writing I've ever seen; and Catherine's labor was the most realistic writing (and from a man, yet!) about this subject. These two scenes showed more about the characters than any narrative could ever do. For those of you who gave this book a low rating, wait till you're older and then go to the library and borrow the audio version of this book. You might change your mind. This is a haunting novel of real (and flawed) people trying to live and love during war time.

A true classic and a must-read for any seeker of true love

All I can say about this work is that if you are interested in or are seeking true love in this life then this book should definitely be part of your journey. After you have finished it you will know many of the reasons why I am making this statement. Hemingway wrote the ending 36 times and its power reflects his effort. It smites me to the core at every reading. I will carry what I learned from A Farewell to Arms in my heart forever.

Overrated and Underrated

I found this novel to be neither splendid nor awful. The only other book by Hemingway I'd read before this was The Old Man and the Sea, and, though there's much to appreciate in A Farewell to Arms, I'm not itching to open a third one.(That's with a complete works on my shelf). The best part about this gracefully written book is the cold feeling of desperation it creates. Lack of specifics about the conflict itself juxtaposed with incredibly detailed descriptions of physical space and random closeup moments almost suffocate the reader with the immediate, sudden, and senseless tragedy one faces in wartime. The matter-of-fact tone can at times be chilling. However, the consistently stilted dialogue is surely hard to swallow, and fights the believability of the characters. Overall the book feels padded with unneeded descriptions that don't promise plot, making it a very slow read. While the ending is fairly good, it's an uphill chore to get there. I can't recommend it unless you buy into hype and/or have an extra strong affinity for war novels.

Slaughterhouse 5, or Slaughterhouse five, or The Children's Crusade, also called A Duty-Dance with Death, is described by the author Kurt Vonnegut's alter-ego, Billy Pilgrim as a `fourth-generation German-American now living in easy circumstances on Cape Cod [and smoking too much], who, as an American Infantry Scout Hors De Combat, As a prisoner of war, witnessed the fire-bombing of Dresden, Germany, "The Florence of the Elbe," a long time ago, and survived to tell the tell. This is a novel somewhat in the telegraphic schizophrenic manner of tales of the planet Tralfamadore, where the flying saucers come from. Peace.' So it goes.

The book is an anti-war book, but tells us that it is about as useful being an anti-war book, as being an anti-typhoon book, meaning that some things will never change. Vonnegut tells us this by giving us the story of Billy Pilgrim, whose most important role in life was to witness the secret American British bombing of Dresden, where 135,000 died, and who spent most of his time as an American Prisoner of War, a survivor who can tell the youth of today what war is all about, by using his shellshock trauma induced time travel capabilities, given to him by the Tralfamadore aliens, to revisit the war, so that he can write a book about it, goes to see old war buddies, becoming unstuck in time, his life as a series of scenes in a non-linear fashion which ends up making linear sense, even though it did not at the time. So it goes.

Slaughterhouse 5 is a very interesting and somewhat touching series of events that finally all come home to roost in the final pages, the loss of man is the gain of man, whether we like it or not, is not the point, Darwin told us that this is what we are designed to do, Billy Pilgrim becomes an optometrist in the process, marries a woman who suddenly has a series problem, while Bill ends up in a zoo on an alien planet to produce children with Montana Wildhack, a famous movie actress, while trying to write his Dresdon story, filled with death, a plane accident where he was the only survivor following his POW term, fact from fiction, he thinks the rescue party are nazis, it sets off the time travel again. So it goes.

Vonnegut is not all down and war depressing however. His humour captured brilliantly by such antics as considering the money tree that grew hundred dollar bills, gems and bank bonds, feeding off the people who met the quicksand by its base, or a young Jesus who once built a cross with his father so the Romans could use it to do something to a protestor that they didn't like. When the wit is there it scores in aces. You have never read the likes of such clowning around before, although compared to Joseph Heller's Catch 22, this one is more personal, less satirical, more direct and exposes that horrible World War II bombing of Dresden. In 1941 Charles Portal, A British Air Staff officer, put forward the idea that entire cities and towns should be bombed. Air Marshall Arthur Harris agreed in February 1942. It was napalmed in 1945. Vonnegut made it very public in this 1969 novel. It was revealed by the historian David Irving in 1963 in his publication, "The Destruction of Dresdon". So it goes.

Billy spends the final days of his life out across New York looking to tell a radio show his story, ends up finding a world war II sci-fi book author's book as window dressing, attempts to buy the book as a memory keepsake because he met the author and knew the war buddy who introduced him to the books, and is nearly arrested, and or committed, old age coupled with the dying man's last bastion of whatever his mind can make of it all, gives us much to ponder in death, by remembering our lives, Pilgrim travels in his memory and says that death is living ones memories over and over again... so best be good... and enjoy life. So it goes.
