Grade 7 Up Gordon uncritically presents a one-sided view of a controversial trend in medicine. In an easy style, he describes some of the techniques of holistic medicine, the practitioners, and the role of the patient. In his zeal to convert readers, he neglects to tell them when scientific studies have shown that previous practices do not work, e.g., homeopathy was first proven ineffective by Oliver Wendell Holmes in 1842. Gordon does not provide conclusive evidence that these practices work; he may cite a study, but not the contradicting work. He mentions Linus Pauling's studies of large doses of Vitamin C to slow the growth of cancer but does not tell readers about all of the studies that have refuted these studies. Black-and-white photographs, drawings, and diagrams illustrate the text. There aren't any other books on this subject for teenage readers, but this biased and incomplete book does not fill the gap. Grade 6-8-These introductions focus on the explorers' voyages and how those journeys influenced further European exploration. The authors describe the myriad dangers of life at sea, the uncertainties of navigating unfamiliar waters, encounters with friendly and hostile native peoples, and the demands of the kings and queens who financed the expeditions. The writing is objective, describing the subjects' bravery and determination as well as their often-condescending and occasionally cruel treatment of the men they commanded and the people they encountered. Although there are chapter notes, sourcing is limited, and the authors use some geographical and nautical terms without adequate definition. A short multiple-choice quiz appears at the end of each chapter. The illustrations are a mixture of period art and generic contemporary photos. The maps of the voyages are not detailed, making it difficult for readers to follow some of the text. Each title has the same introduction. While these books are adequate for reports, they are not as strong as Albert Marrin's outstanding The Sea King: Sir Francis Drake and His Times (S & S, 1995) or Joan Elizabeth Goodman's lavishly illustrated A Long and Uncertain Journey: The 27,000-Mile Voyage of Vasco da Gama (Mikaya, 2001). Superb submarine thriller

Cary Grant gives a creditable performance as the Captain of the USS Copperfin, a submarine sent to Tokyo Bay, in order to gather information for the coming Doolittle Raid. Aided by a superb cast,including the inimitable John Garfield as a skirt-chasing torpedoman, Dane Clark, who portrays an embittered sailor with a grudge against the Axis powers, and the always rock solid Alan Hale as "Cookie" the loveable, big bear of a mess cook. This movie does have a bit of a propagandist speech, which most movies of the genre in the 40's did. The fact-based appendectomy lends a sense of added drama to the story. This rates as one of the best submarine films ever done.

(Nothing personal) T.S. Eliot read it THREE CONSECUTIVE TIMES upon his receipt of the book, and pronounced it as the " First real advance in American letters". Such would be an advisable regimen for anyone even vaguely suspicious of a career as an author. Any rating below five stars, should be considered the isolated ramblings of a ner-do-well, or some other type of intellectual drifter.

Open your eyes to true US History

This book will be one of the most important book you will ever read. Before I read this book I knew little of Malcolm X, but after reading not only was I enriched, but it forced me to look at the world in a different light. Hand this book to anyone who is not living up to their full potential and you will see a change. This book was a challenge for me, it filled me with a great sarrow of what one race can do to hold down another. Do your self a great favor and read this book, it will be the greatest lesson you will ever learn for around four dollars. This book isn't at all what you would think. Malcolm X is a hero of mine and has taught more to me then any teacher.

Lost leader

This is the first autobiography I have ever read that has actually said something. I mean others have things to say but this autobiography not only deals with the person, but other important issues as well. The story line of his life starts with Malcolm's childhood and ends with his tragic feud with the nation of Islam, dealing with important issues along the way. Throughout Malcolm's whole life it's as he's lost, he needs guidance. Starting out in Boston looking to find a way of life he wants. Moving to Harlem in New York city changing again to fit the life style he still sought after. Until he make the greatest change of his life when he commits to Islam. even as he finds new direction he is still lost as he takes on the biggest struggle of his life. Malcolm was truly a revolutionary man of the times, exposing the dark side of American that nobody wanted to deal with. Other leaders such as Martin Luther King were more passive leaders and didn't necessarily deal with the heart of the problem. Reading this book challenged me and some of my views I had of the past and of today.

I'd read the book allready in german ('cause I'am german) and can't stop reading it again and again. If you read it carefuly and open your mind to it's massage it will change your life. Only one other book can change lifes the bible the real words of the living god. The message of gods word will change your life for the eternaty your life after death, but Malcolms message change your life here and your relationship to other people and peoples. Not what it seems

This book would be fine if you just arrived in the US from a third world country and wanted to learn what a home security system was. It would be a useful guide to someone wanting to hire a contractor to install a system. It was of little use, however, to someone wanting to actually install a system. I kept thinking I was going to get to the chapter that discussed wiring in series or in parallel. Or a discussion on daisy chain, or home run. I never did. In fact, there is no mention of these (or other little items like resistors) even in the glossary. It's not a bad book, it's just not a "how to" book.

Good Introduction to Buying or Building a System

This book is a book that covers several areas.

First, it discusses home security in a general nature covering all of its forms from intrusion detection to fire and smoke. It helps you to analyze and define what are your security needs. Determining your needs before you start to look at solutions can be a real cost saver.

Second, it looks at the various types of systems that are availabe. This includes prepackaged systems that are basically turn key operations. It compared the offerings from several vendors to make vendor selection your choice rather than restricing yourself to one offering.

Third, it looks at the solutions you could build yourself, either independently or in cooperation with one of the established vendors.

Finally, it covers what you might call 'living with the system.' This includes testing, day to day use, maintenance.

This is a general introductory book that covers virtually every aspect of building and using a security system for your house. If this is something you are planning to do, it will provide enough information for you to make intelligent decisions.

If you are looking for general / superficial information about security systems then you have come to the right place. The book just didn't have enough real world experience with security systems. It did point you toward providers of basic home security systems like ADT but did not provide very much insight that a good reviewer of the product should have.
