You don't know about me, but that ain't no matter.

I didn't read 'Catcher' in high school. However, when I was in high school, a friend of mine claimed that he would introduce himself to girls as Holden Caulfield, and the one who knew who that was, well, he was going to marry her.

I'm now thirty-two, and I just read 'Catcher' for the first time, two weeks ago.

I wrote my Master's Thesis on Twain, primarily on Huck Finn.

I'm glad I read Huck first.

Huck in a 1950's boarding school is an accurate summation of 'Catcher', I think.

I know I'm too old for it, but I was playing a video game on the internet the other day, and a teenager happened to ask if anyone has ever read "Catcher in the Rye?" I said, "Maybe." The teenager (a high schooler made to read the book) then asked: "Why is the main character such a d----bag?"

It sounds something like a previous review here.

If you think Holden is a whiner-- or worse (the same kind of person would also probably think Huck is just a fool)-- then you're either so much like him that it's too painful to recognize it, or you haven't got soul enough (yet, perhaps) to appreciate him.

'Catcher' is an enjoyable read, and very American book, and Salinger owes everything good about his best work to Mr. Mark Twain.

This book caught me just as I was going over the edge.

I read this book in one sitting when I was 15. I was hypnotised by the world of Holden Caulfield. To me he represents the dark side of the teen age mind. Many fail to see the real Holden, passing him off as just another teen-ager when he is in fact a very depressed and mentaly unstable person whose actions and feelings are those of a person suffering from a nevous breakdown. Anyone who has been through a period of mental instability can see the true meaning of the title. When I was 15 I went through a very severe battle with depresson after reading this book I saw the world from a compleatly diferent perspective. It gave me hope and understanding and as is implied in the title it caught me before I went over the edge. I think the reason that this book is so popular is because we are all crazy to some degree and those who criticise the book or dislike it are simply those who cannot accept that part of themselves. As long as there are humans on this earth this book will remain a classic

The catcher in the rye is by far, the best novel I've read lately. Not only does it show in a magnific way how tough and funny (in its own way) relationships between teenagers are, but also it desribes every situation as if you were there. It's just amazing and everyone should read it, mostly if you wanna know how a person feels when he's 16. Besides, it's exactly the way I would have written a novel.

The book Leonardo da Vinci in my opinion was a truly remarkable book. Unlike most biographies this book focused more on the achievements and ideas of da Vinci rather than his entire life story. It told about the many inventions and philosophies written down in da Vinci's journals. About the Author
Linda Wagner-Martin is Hanes Professor of English and Comparative Literature at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA. She was the 2011 recipient of the Hubbell Medal for lifetime service in American literature (sponsored by the MLA), and has received the Guggenheim fellowship, the senior National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship, the Bunting Institute fellowship, and awards from the Rockefeller Foundation, the American Philosophical Association and others. She has published more than fifty-five books of criticism, some edited, including "Sylvia Plath: A Biography "(1987) and ""Favored Strangers": Gertrude Stein and Her Family" (1995), as well as studies of Ernest Hemingway, Zelda Fitzgerald, Barbara Kingsolver, and others. Recent books are "A History of American Literature from 1950 to the Present" (2013) and "Toni Morrison and the Maternal" (2014).

For the Facts

This biography is a solid resource for the facts about Sylvia Plath's life, written by the editor of the Sylvia Plath Info Blog and former editor of Plath Profiles, well-known for his meticulous attention to accuracy. Written as straight scholarship, there is very little emotion, opinion, or bias in this work. The prose therefore is straightforward and at times can occasionally feel a bit plodding, especially to those already well-versed in Plath and looking for new information or perspective. For those new to Plath, this book is an absolutely terrific beginning, unclouded by subjective opinion. For scholars, its greatest asset is perhaps the timeline to nail down exactly what happened and when.

Compelling

There are literally hundreds of Plath biographies out there but this is really the one to begin with. Steinberg painstakingly details every aspect of Plath's life without heavily weighing in with personal commentary or jaded viewpoints- it's as accurate and stark account of what happened as any other book out there, perhaps more chilling because of the detached voice. It allows the novice reader to decide for themselves, to give this narrative meaning. More importantly, what this book accomplishes that no other biography does is tie Plath's poems to specific events and places significant to the poet. The book is not just a progression of her life but a progression of her work as an author as well. Be sure to check out Steinberg's website, A Celebration, This Is which adds a whole other layer of depth as he painstakingly visited and photographed nearly all of the places mentioned in the book.

A lucid, compelling, and precise biography

Peter Steinberg's new biography charts Sylvia Plath's tumultous career in moving prose. His narrative demonstrates precision and is informed by the recent landmarks in Plath scholarship. His own passion for Plath's writing and travels to Plath sites lend a significant dimension to his descriptions of the places and events that inspired some of Plath's most famous poems. I think this book will be a welcome addition to high school reading lists and will inspire students to explore Plath's poetry.
