Grade 7 Up-This book starts with a recounting of the February, 1993, raid at the Branch Davidian compound by agents of the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF). The unsuccessful raid, during which four ATF agents and five Branch Davidians were killed, led to a 51-day standoff with an even more tragic ending in which Branch Davidian leader David Koresh and 73 of his followers died in flames and gunfire. The tragedy left many questions unanswered and cast doubts on the government's actions and handling of such situations. Chapters explaining Koresh's evolution to self-proclaimed prophet provide reasons why the Davidians held out during the standoff but do little to promote understanding. The chapter exploring "What Went Wrong at Waco?" is the focal point of this book, which is part of a series created to examine disasters and look at the changes made so that they would not be repeated. While it is worthwhile examining reforms made as a result of government errors, the text is too dry and detailed to appeal to general readers. Average-quality, black-and-white photos appear throughout.
