Magnificent!

The greatest living literary critic turns out to be nothing more, and nothing less, than the greatest living reader. He has read more than anybody else: More completely, more intelligently, and more humanely. Harold Bloom does not subscribe to any extrinsic, ideologically motivated "theory" (unless intelligence, insight, and ecstasy constitute theory), but he does believe in three intrinsic standards: Aesthetic splendor, cognitive power, and wisdom. One can read the volumes "straight-through" over a period of several (sleepless) weeks or dip into them from time to time. Either way, one will surely go back to them over and over again for the rest of one's reading life, for illumination, enlightenment, and pleasure. Bloom reminds us above all, and we need to be reminded in a time of easy "gizmo" distractions, that reading is not oppressive but liberating, perhaps the most significant personal act a human being will make to assert his or her freedom. An absolute "must-have" set for Harold Bloom and literature reader/collectors.

at my local library there are shelves of books in a single series, each book with the name of a famous writer of fiction or poetry as the title. each book is a collection of critical essays by various writers familiar with the work of the particular author. the editor of all of these books is harold bloom, and, having looked inside several of the volumes published by THE READERS’ SUBSCRIPTION, there is an introductory essay, I’m going to go out on a limb and say within every volume about the particular author, written by bloom. from what I understand, the essays in THE EPIC volume are mostly from the author volumes.
the reader can be grateful that early on in his introduction harold bloom states that today there is no clear definition of what an epic is, that is in the sense, the tradition, of homer and milton, for while scanning the names listed in the table of contents even a cursory reader of literature will scrunch a brow and scratch one’s forehead in consternation at some of bloom’s inclusions. for instance, the poems, samuel taylor coleridge’s THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER, t. s. eliot’s WASTELAND, and william wordsworth’s PRELUDE. some of the authors, tolstoy for instance, it may be argued lead epic lives, but categorically what does the book of GENESIS have in common with thomas mann’s MAGIC MOUNTAIN?
bloom’s nineteen literary selections are strung together, if at all, by his discussion of irony. bloom asks, ’Do heroic vision and saga say one thing while always meaning another?’ and his answer, ‘What defines epic, ancient and modern, for me is heroism, which transcends irony.’
readers of bloom’s other books about literary texts will encounter many of the authors bloom has discussed before, and the same critical interests pushing him across familiar territory for something previously unseen. but for readers who enjoy literary criticism of the great works of literature, bloom’s obsession and passion are never tiring.
