The quality of this collection is undeniable. Three essays apiece are devoted to six major Romantic poets (Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Keats, Shelley), and the contributors are distinguished (Frye, Bloom, Pottle, Abrams, Bate, de Man, et al.). While the essays (all reprinted here) are specific, the collection when read inductively gives an excellent "picture" of Romanticism. This volume is a good beginning for the new "Critical Cosmos" series (to be some 80 titles, covering American, English, and world literatures). It is a particularly good starting point for college students, although the bibliographies rely too heavily on monographs, offering little guidance to periodical literature. And it is pricey.
