Gr 6-9--Beginning with the slave revolt led by Nat Turner in Virginia in 1831, Paulson details important events between this bloody event and the passage of the Fugitive Slave Law in 1850. The Underground Railroad, the abolitionist movement, and the relationship between blacks and the Seminole tribe of Florida are discussed. Profusely illustrated with black-and-white reproductions, this book aptly conveys the mood and tensions that permeated this period of history. Some of the highlights of these years have been adequately covered in other texts, but this title is noteworthy for presenting information in greater detail, thus showing to what extraordinary lengths some free and enslaved blacks went in order to obtain freedom and the oppression they faced. Overall, this volume is insightful and informative.

Gr. 5-9. Paulson covers African American history between the Nat Turner revolt of 1831 and the time of the Fugitive Slave Law in 1850 in this latest title from the Milestones in Black American History series. Detailed chapters on slave life, the Underground Railroad, fugitive slave resistance in Florida during the Seminole wars, and the growing abolition movement incorporate many details gleaned from primary sources. The gracefully flowing text strongly emphasizes the initiatives taken and active roles played by slaves, freed slaves, and free blacks in the unfolding drama of heightening pre-Civil War tensions. The engaging writing style, liberal use of black-and-white photos, and solid yet not overwhelming store of information make the book a valuable addition to social studies and African American culture collections. Gray-tinted sidebars set within the regular text are visually distracting, but they don't detract from the overall value of this strong title. Milestones table; bibliography. Anne O'Malley
