First Impressions: entertaining and delightful read
By Dr Chuang Wei Ping
"FIRST IMPRESSIONS" circa 1795, was the manuscript of Jane Austen's most popular 1813 novel. Most translated. Never out of Print. 200 years later, it was the basis of a BBC programme starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. After Harold Bloom's Guide was published in 2005, a movie appeared starring Keira Knightley (Knightley is a character in EMMA). It featured in "Becoming Jane" (2008) starring Anne Hathaway and "The Jane Austen Book Club" (2008) starring a number of prominent actors including Maggie Smith.

Harold Bloom tells us Jane Austen's father sought a publisher for "First Impressions" but it was rejected. This was not Austen's only disappointment. "Susan" was sold in 1803 for ten pounds, and was not printed until 14 years later as "NORTHANGER ABBEY". Jane Austen completed "Elinor and Marianne" in 1796. Elinor and Marianne did not have a publisher and Jane Austen published it anonymously "By a Lady" as "SENSE AND SENSIBILITY" at her own risk in 1811. Eventually, it made £140.

Harold Bloom tells us Francis Burney's 1782 novel "Cecilia" provided the phrase "pride and prejudice", and after the success of Sense and Sensibility, First Impressions resurfaced anonymously "By the author of Sense and Sensibility" as "PRIDE AND PREJUDICE". (Francis was probably a woman: I got this from Barnes & Noble P&P's introduction by Carol Howard which mentions Jane Austen calling Francis "Fanny") The early editions of Pride and Prejudice did not have the author's name.

This Guide by Harold Bloom is astonishingly entertaining and a delight to read. Harold Bloom is usually very intense and profound. The downside of the Yale professor's intellect is that Bloom's books do not come cheap. The only time I came across cheap Bloom's books was a dozen brand new "Shakespeare: the invention of the human" on sale at $5 each. When I checked out all 12 copies, the happy store owner gave me a further discount for "helping him get rid of the junk". $50 in 1999 dollars for 12 Bloom books which were "too heavy to read".

Harold Bloom dispenses with the Dramatis Personae in 5 succinct pages. His brilliant summary of all the characters is way superior to Cliffs notes and other student guides.

Bloom's summary and analysis is not in his usual writing style. Bloom and the other contributors showed a writing style "Becoming Jane" throughout this Guide. This is a good thing. Pleasant reading like so: "Volume III, chapter 1 details the many splendors of Pemberley in considerable detail...The housekeeper, Mrs Reynolds, gives a tour of the areas of the home...Elizabeth is particularly moved by Mr Darcy's kindness and generosity to his sister, and it becomes clear that she has misjudged a kind and noble man."

The Critical Views are a collection of papers from distinguished professors and the "literary mafia dons". A little sampling of what they say is in order.

E.M.Halliday (Narrative Perspective) "note how fast the storyteller can shift to drastic synopsis when it seems desirable to step up the action..."

Tony Tanner (Defining Love) "words such as 'gratitude' and 'esteem' are used to describe Elizabeth's growing feelings for Darcy."

Anita G. Gorman (Elizabeth Bennet's Appearance) "certain characteristics to Elizabeth gives us indirect clues to contemporary standards of beauty."

Anne Crippen Ruderman (Mr Darcy's Virtues) "...Darcy represents society, and Elizabeth is a champion of individualism."
"Elizabeth is an unreliable narrator, and her statements about herself must be weighed against her actions."

Allison Thompson (Dancing in Austen's Time) "Because so many couples stood relatively passively during the dance, they used this time as a welcome opportunity to talk and flirt..."

H. Elizabeth Ellington (Landscape and the Filming) "the most visual of Austen's six completed novels...lends itself to cinematic adaptation..." Jane Austen was almost the perfect film scriptwriter. This long paper is compulsory reading, particularly when there are so many movie versions of this novel. Movies emphasise the politically correctness of Elizabeth developing her affection for Darcy before seeing Pemberley; while in the novel, the sequence is not so clear. Pemberly is about 4000 to 5000 acres, perhaps 20 times the size of New York's Central Park. Film makers try to sell us a version of OLD ENGLAND: Pemberly is modelled after places like Chatsworth, Blenheim and Warwick Castle.

Donald Gray's paper (Money) must be the highlight of this Guide. By one calculation, Darcy's annual income is over $6 million in 1989 dollars. I use the value of prime Manhattan real estate and world capital cities (low in 1989 just before the Kuwait war) to convert 1989 dollars to 2009 dollars. Labour was cheap, income taxes low, inflation negligible and the purchasing power high. Jane Austen paid her real cook 8 pounds per annum. Women's wealth was expressed in lump sum net worth, from which there was fixed 4% annual returns.

Efraht Marguliet (Elizabeth's Petticoat) The fact that this paper even exists, along with erudite papers on "Affection", "Women in Austen", "Hero and Heroine", "Mr Bennet and Elizabeth Bennett" show that multiple lenses were used to capture the novel from various angles.

"Sanditon" was the unfinished Jane Austen work. It is a blessing for the literary world that FIRST IMPRESSIONS did not end up unpublished because a publisher rejected it. Pride and Prejudice exists today in many formats and compendiums. My personal preference is the copy published by Barnes and Noble, although one of the 1813 1st Edition run of just 1500 copies would be nice. Harold Bloom's Guide is the best companion to Pride and Prejudice I have found. It is a truth universally acknowledged that a Hardcover guide of good fortune must be in want of a Paperback edition.

A useful starting place for study
By Elizabeth A. Root
This is a useful basic guide to studying Pride and Prejudice. It includes a biography of Jane Austen; a summary and analysis of the story; list of characters; bibliographies of her works, and works about her; information about contributors and an index.

About half the book is taken up by excerpts from articles and essays about the work written by a variety of authors. I think that the pieces suffer a bit from being cut down, but they do raise some interesting questions and impart some interesting information. They also help serve as a basis for further research. My personal favorite was Donald Gray's work on Money.

Not an essential work for understanding Pride and Prejudice, but a good starting point for studying it.

Overrated
By Sunglasses at Night
I purchased this book thinking it would be a scholarly look at Pride and Prejudice given Harold Bloom's Yale credentials. However, it was disappointing from page 1, full of errors. For example, the book lists the publication date for P&P as January 29, 1813 but it was actually released January 28, 1813. There's also a comment that Darcy didn't find any of the women in Meryton pretty but that's not true either - he refers to Jane as "handsome". There are many more inaccuracies. I was also disappointed by the writing. I was expecting much more from a Yale professor. Perhaps adequate if you have never read P&P and need to write a high school paper but Sparks Notes would be cheaper and just as inaccurate.
