Grade 5-9After an extensive definition and historical discussion of learning disorders, Connelly discusses some individual cases, the impact on society, finding the causes, and treatment. Every topic is presented in the most general of terms, with a lot of repetition. Additional material (one to two pages in length) such as information about a specific school or person is annoyingly inserted in the chapters, sometimes in the middle of a sentence. Black-and-white photographs of children and some famous people with LD such as Patton and Edison appear throughout. The appendixes include organizations, a list of famous people, and the Entitlements of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act. The case studies clearly illustrate the challenges faced by individuals diagnosed LD as well as those around them, and the profiles of Whoopi Goldberg, Thomas Edison, and others are realistic accounts of people who have compensated for their disabilities and become successful. The book will be appropriate for high-school reports, but its academic tone may be even better suited to teachers and other professionals.
