A good basic reference on the subject

A good reference book. The first section is organised by decades - 1900s to 1990s - with an interesting commentary of the trends, developments, designers and fashion movers and shakers of each decade. The main section of the book is then an alphabetical listing of designers, obviously with more information on some than others. Both sections are quite well illustrated. The only problem if have is who is left out - where is Elie Saab, for one? Otherwise, this is a very good introductory reference book.

Both Volumes are very good

I have both volumes of this book (by Linda Watson) and I would rate the combination of both books with 5-stars.
As the previous commentator stated, the first half of the book describes a very nice history of fashion (from 1900-1999). Each chapter is broken down by decades of fashion.
Then the second half of the book has an A-to-Z listing of the most famous fashion designers (and their fashion design houses). I agree with the previous commentator that a small number of famous designers were not mentioned , however, this may be because the book stopped at 1999. (??)However, I was not displeased with the A-to-Z listing,since most famous designers were mentioned.
There are many photos in this book. (Note that not every single designers' styles are shown in the said photos, but enough of them are shown to give the reader an idea of the various influential styles).
